6 Skincare Resolutions for the New Year

December 22nd, 2011

With the holidays behind us it’s time to gear up for the New Year – the one time of year when we put pen to paper to outline all our resolutions. While losing weight and saving money may top your list this year, don’t forget about your skin. Here are some quick and easy resolutions your skin will love in 2012:

Protect your skin from the sun everyday: Make a commitment to protect your skin from UV damage and wear sunscreen under your makeup or purchase makeup that has at least SPF 15. If you don’t know what’s right for your skin type ask your doctor what they recommend. UV damage can cause premature wrinkles and sun spots. By protecting your skin from UV rays you will continue to look more youthful throughout the New Year!

Throw away outdated skincare products: Make-up that hasn’t been used in a while and outdated skincare products may be hosting bacteria and can cause breakouts. Open the medicine cabinet and empty your make-up bag. If you haven’t touched that skincare product or piece of makeup in a few months it’s time to say goodbye. Your skin will thank you later.

Sleep without make-up: Not removing your make-up is one of the worst don’ts when it comes to your skincare routine. Makeup clogs pours and can leave your complexion looking dull. Wash, tone and moisturize your skin every night before bed this year.

Exfoliate: This is the step most people skip as part of their skincare routine. Try exfoliating at least once a week with an at home facial scrub – you will see an immediate difference. If you can make it into the office, try microdermabrasion, a chemical peel or hydrafacial. Peels in particular can take years off your face.

Consult a trained professional before pursuing aesthetician services (Botox, dermal fillers): Minimally invasive procedures including Botox® and dermal fillers such as Artefill®, Juvederm® or Restylane® continue to grow in popularity.  But not every physician is trained to perform these procedures. Make sure you check the physician’s credentials and validate they have extensive experience using the products they have recommended.

Manage stress: Stress affects your health and over time can cause over-production of oil and inflammation which results in bad skin. Relieve stress this year by taking a walk, going to a yoga class or taking up a hobby. You will stay happier, your health will improve and it will be reflected on the outside.

Sculptra Aesthetic Special Event

June 20th, 2011

Join San Diego’s Sculptra® Expert for our special seminar on Tuesday, June 28th

In many cases, Sculptra Aesthetic can more closely approximate the desired outcomes of a ‘liquid facelift’ performed with other fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane.  Sculptra is an ideal choice of a volumizing agent of the face for patients that want gradual results over time and when they want their own body to do the work.  Sculptra works by stimulating one’s own body to form collagen in the treated areas, creating pan-facial, natural-looking revolumization.  Because it is long-lasting, it becomes a more economical choice for addressing facial wrinkles and folds—it is FDA-approved for 2 years of duration, and in published clinical studies results often last 3 years or longer.

To learn more about the benefits of Sculptra Aesthetic, please RSVP for our special seminar on June 28th, from 5:30-8pm.

Non-surgical Eye Rejuvenation using Injectable Fillers

Eye Rejuvenation using injectable fillers in Encinitas, San DiegoA recent conference and a string of successfully treated patients here at Surfside Dermatology inspired this most recent post.  I recently lectured at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery conference.  One of my fellow lecturers, an ophthalmologist who specializes in cosmetic surgery of the eye, spoke about patient safety in blepharoplasty surgery.  He commented that he performs fewer and fewer of these procedures.  Instead, many patients that would have received surgical treatment a decade ago now receive successful periocular rejuvenation by replacing volume around the eye.

I have also found this to be true.  Aging changes around the eye area are due to a  combination of factors—volume loss, loss of skin elasticity, muscle relaxation, and loss of facial bone support.  Fat loss and loss of soft tissue and bone support in the upper and lower eyelids inevitably occurs.   In many cases, hyaluronic acid filler agents such as Restylane, Perlane, and Juvederm serve as excellent choices for volume restoration around the eye.  Fat transfer is another means of providing durable improvement to the upper and lower eyelid area.  Fillers and fat can improve tear troughs and hollowing out around the eye.

Removal of Age Spots in San Diego

Oftentimes, women do an excellent job taking care of their facial skin by wearing sunscreen, practicing sun protection, using appropriate prescription topical creams, and using laser and filler technology to uphold a youthful appearance.  However, there are certain commonly exposed areas of skin that are forgotten, and give our age away—the neck, chest, and hands.  This blog entry will focus on rejuvenation of the hands.

First and foremost, I always recommend to patients to use a zinc oxide-based physical sunblock—not only on their face, but on the neck, chest, and hands.  Use of an appropriate sunscreen, especially in sunny climates like Southern California, can help prevent degradation of collagen (thinning of the skin), and the appearance of sun spots (solar lentigines) and precancerous and cancerous skin lesions.  Skin thinning and some of the brown spots can be treated by using topical creams such as retinoids and lightening/ brightening agents, but often more comprehensive treatment modalities are necessary.

Hand Rejuvenation, removal of age spots, san diegoBrown spots and chronic sun damage can be greatly improved by a series of intense pulsed light treatments.  This is considered a no-downtime procedure.  It targets brown spots, causing them to darken and then flake off over approximately two weeks time.  Repeated treatments may even promote collagen growth, allowing more supple skin.

Volume loss in the hands over time results in more prominent veins and more visible tendons and this skin.  The loss of fat on the back of the hands can be easily addressed by the use of injectable fillers such as Radiesse, or by fat transfer, which may result in a longer-lasting response.

If rope-like, dilated veins are the most significant concern of a patient, sclerotherapy can be used to treat these prominent veins.  Sclerotherapy involves the injection of veins.  The procedure is quick, relatively painless, and can often be performed with a single injection of veins on the hand.

Our eyes may be the window to our soul, but our hands tell the history of our life.  Make sure they are well taken care of and always well protected.  You will always be in good hands at Surfside Dermatology under the care of Dr. Melanie Palm and Dr. William Heimer.

Facial Volumizing With Sculptra Aesthetic, Encinitas

February 11th, 2011

Nonsurgical facelift with Sculptra Aesthetic, a biostimulatory agent

I noticed, while leafing through one of the weekly periodicals, that nationwide advertising for Sculptra Aesthetic has begun.  Although many patients and even doctors might classify this product as a “filler”, it is in actuality a “biostimulatory agent”—meaning that it causes your own body to produce collagen in the areas of product placement.

Sculptra Aesthetic is composed of poly-L-lactic acid, a complex carbohydrate.  Once Sculptra Aesthetic has been placed deep under the skin, it slowly degrades into carbon dioxide and water over a period of months, promoting facial volumization over the ensuing weeks and months—a gradual change that patients love.  Best of all, the results are FDA-approved for 2 years in duration.  Oftentimes, I have found that volume restoration persists for longer than 24 months.

Sculptra EncinitasI really enjoy using Sculptra Aesthetic in patients because it allows them to slowly regain a youthful appearance over a period of weeks to months.  Starting around age 30, we lose facial fat, soft tissue volume, and even support from the underlying facial bones.  Sculptra Aesthetic is a powerful agent for creating natural facial rejuvenation by addressing volume loss in the temples, cheeks, perioral area, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and jawline.

So who is a good candidate for facial revolumizing with Sculptra Aesthetic?  Although I often use this product in patients in their 40′s to 60′s, it is one of my favorite choices for facial volumizing in younger patients who are just starting to inquire about injectable fillers.  Younger patients often require less product to complete a pleasing result, making Sculptra Aesthetic a smart, economical choice.  Another patient population that benefits well from facial volume restoration is the post-facelift patient.  Unless adequate fat transfer or volume restoration has been performed at the time of the facelift, volume deficits of the face can be addressed with a biostimulatory agent like Sculptra Aesthetic.

As a physician trainer for Sculpta Aesthetic, I have had the opportunity to train dermatologists and plastic surgeons on the use of this product in treating the aging face.  Now, I feel there is a better opportunity for patient education on Sculptra Aesthetic.  Even better yet, Sculptra Aesthetic is now offering a $100 rebate per vial through March 31, 2011.  Please feel free to call us at (760) 944-7000 for more information and to schedule your cosmetic consultation.
